About

My name is Matteo Farinella and I am a Presidential Scholar in Society and Neuroscience at Columbia University, where I study the use of comics and other visual narratives in science communication.

After completing a PhD in neuroscience in 2013, I started drawing comics and illustrations about science. I believe that scientific research should be open and accessible and I think visual narratives can play an important role in bridging the gap between academia and the general public.

Both comics about science and empirical research about comics are growing in number, but finding them is not always easy and rarely is one informed by the other. The main goal of this website is to collect this material and provide an entry point for other people interested in this emerging field. Along the way I hope to build an interdisciplinary community of scientists, artists and storytellers, to foster new collaborations and share ideas on how to create effective visual narratives.
